In early 2012, the band found themselves with a few weeks to spare after Anthony was forced to have foot surgery, postponing several weeks of their tour. With this free time, Josh, Flea and Chad entered The Boat recording studio, which Flea owned, and recorded early demos for six songs.

A rerecording of one of these songs — Was Never There — eventually found a home on Josh’s solo album, To Be One With You, released in late 2019. That recording also featured Flea on bass; how it compares to the 2012 version is unknown, though Josh implied in a 2020 interview that the final recording did not stray too far from the sound of the demo.

By late March, the I’m With You tour resumed, and with that period of activity these songs were left behind. The band would not enter the studio again until 2014 for another set of demo sessions that were ultimately scrapped as well.
