Anthony had this to say about the song in a Sirius XM feature:

Flea had just come back from a journey to South Central Los Angeles where he met a fascinating character by the name of Faye. And somehow Faye inspired him, maybe just the person that she was, and we started rocking this bass line that was funky, and it came in at a very similar time, there’s another funky bass line which ended up being the song “Poster Child.” As we were playing this, we were just kind of riffing off this bass line that Flea had brought in and John suggested that Chad play drums in an Isaac Hayes tonography. I took these kind of jams and whatnot with me when I went to Kauai to try to flesh out the songs and I thought, there’s no way that we can do both of these songs, they’re both funky Flea bass lines... and then, lo and behold, inspiration arrived and we ended up with “Peace and Love” along with “Poster Child,” and that’s that.

Flea also spoke about the song for Whole Lotta Red Hot:

“Peace and Love” was originally called Faye. Only for a working title, we always have these working titles, I don’t even know why I’m bringing it up, just when I think about the origin of it. Once again this is a song that started with a bass line. I had been in a part of Los Angeles, in the Projects, met a woman named Faye, and enjoyed her company, a friend of my wife and I. And was just thinking about her and playing bass and this bass line came out. Obviously it turned into something completely different, and it’s a beautiful sentiment that Anthony sings about. Very uplifting and warming. And it’s cool, there’s a saxophone solo by Josh Johnson, John treated it so it doesn’t really sound like a saxophone but it’s a saxophone. And it’s a funky and kind of ethereal funk jam.
