SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE
APRIL 19, 1984
"It's something different ... sort of bone-crunching mayhem funk."
And that, folks, is how vocalist Anthony (Swan) Kiedis describes his band, The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The Peppers will be making their San Diego County debut at The Rodeo this Tuesday night as part of the "Adventures With Paradise" dance/concert series.
Actually, the Peppers never intended to become a serious band. They were playing their hard-line, funk-punk-soul music for their own pleasure.
But one night at an L.A. nightclub, where they performed just one song, they were met with such positive response that the Peppers agreed to return two weeks later -- to perform two songs.
The band, which definitely leans toward the off-beat and untried, once was almost booed from a stage when it opened for Oingo Boingo.
But far from being discouraged, the group continued on with its bits of lunacy. The Peppers showed up for one concert painted blue; at another show they walked on stage dressed only in well-placed socks.
The Chili Peppers, recently signed to EMI/Enigma records, have indeed managed to liven up the club circuit. Don't miss them Tuesday night.
